Bilingual (English/Spanish) Student Research Assistant – School of Public Health

Application Deadline: April 20, 2024

Start Date: May 1, 2024

Dr. Meredith Gartin seeks to hire a Bilingual (Spanish/English) Research Assistant (part-time, hourly) to assist on a project conducting a needs assessment and photovoice interviews with the Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership (ALIRP) for the summer term.

The Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership (ALIRP) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) based in Birmingham that provides direct support to asylum-seekers and refugees through their volunteer model called ‘Care Teams’. The current model focuses on the household as a unit with a total of around 40 households. Each household has an average of 4.5 dependents under 18 years of age, and 64% of the people partnered with ALIRP are under the age of 18. The goal of this summer research project is to conduct a community-based, needs assessment for ALIRP to expand their care team model by creating a youth mentorship program.

The research assistant will conduct a needs assessment with parents and adolescents (15 years or older) to identify key areas of mentorship, such as practicing English, acculturating to American public schools, seeking employment or vocational training. The research assistant will also conduct photovoice interviews with the adolescents to engage the youth in the discussion around mentorship and challenges they face in their day-to-day.
